I took my first ceramics class in high school, circa 1989, and have been working in clay ever since. Granted, it’s been a relationship of convenience with highs and lows. Years went by when I wasn’t able to ‘get my hands dirty’. Yet, I’ve always felt a sense of clarity when working. I love it because it’s tactile. I get to use my hands to create, it’s messy and I always come home with forgotten bits of clay up round my elbows which seem impossible to wash without a shower. However, the best reason to work in clay is to give the pieces to friends and family as gifts. This has been the greatest joy in working in clay.
If you are reading this and you have one of my pots, I’d love it if you emailed me a photograph or two. (davidbeatty001 at yahoo dot com) Over the years I can’t remember who has what and this would be a fun way to keep track and remember who out there has some of my pottery.
Here are some photos of pieces I’ve done over the years… Enjoy!
